Ann Street Gallery's Sensing Space: Contemporary Interpretations of the Landscape

After months visiting at the wrong times, I finally got to check out the Ann Street Gallery in Newburgh, NY for their current exhibit Sensing Space: Contemporary Interpretations of the Landscape.

(Look at the great detail!) Leah Wolff - Deforestation.

The show boast a great array of art from all different medias and perspectives with the underlying theme of landscape. There are sculptures, great 2D works using a variety of material from thread to grass, a 3D animation, and more. The Ann Street Gallery does a great job of using their space for this show, with a great interactive installation by Robmat Butler and Barron Hall titled "Micro Climate Installation" in the back corner:

Here, you walk through the hallway to a dark room with binoculars. Across the room are dimly lit model homes and environments for you to see through the magnification of the binoculars.

The artist in the show are: Gail Biederman, Robmat Butler, Matthew Cox, Chad Curtis, Barron Hall, Tricia McLaughlin, Gene Schmidt, and Leah Wolf.

Sensing Space: Contemporary Interpretations of the Landscape will be on display until May 29th.

The Ann Street Gallery is definitely worth checking out for a few reasons. The first being that it is a great gallery space with innovative exhibits. The second being that it is bringing the arts to Newburgh, a city which is trying to emerge as a destination.

So go grab a bite at The Wherehouse on the corner and check out the Ann Street Gallery!

On The Agenda for the Hudson Valley Art Owl

All work and now play makes the Hudson Valley Art Owl a dull blogger.

Here's what's coming up this weekend:

Saturday May 1st from 6-9 at the Ann Street Gallery in Newburgh NY will be the opening reception of Sensing Space: Contemporary Interpretations of the Landscape.

I'm excited to check out the show and the gallery space. I've been meaning to check out the Ann Street Gallery, but the few times I've walked over it's been between shows.

This Friday, April 30th at The Falcon in Marlboro NY is singer/songwriter Dayna Kurtz and on Saturday, May 1st is the Jerome Sabbagh quartet. The scenic patio (overlooking a waterfall!) opens up at 5 and the music commences at 7.

If you have not yet made the trip to The Falcon I highly recommend going.

Good food, good music, good people.

Just overall goodness!

I'm also thinking about doing the Artist Soap Box Derby this summer in Kingston NY.

I heard about it during the Cultural Stimulus talk at the Beahive in Kingston.

Frances Lehman Loeb and Barrett Art Center's Photowork 2010

Yesterday, In an effort to kill some time before the Barrett Art Center's Photowork 2010 opening reception I visted the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center at Vassar College. Their current exhibit is not in the regular gallery space, no it's much more innovative.

The exhibit Harry Roseman: Hole in the Wall is a site-specefic installation in the entryway to the main galleries commissioned by Harry Roseman.

Never one to be disappointed at the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, the main galleries provide a great oeuvre of work to enjoy, many with recognizable names for almost everyone.

It's upsetting that this great art center will be closed from May 18th 2010 until January 2011 to do repairs on the roof. I recommend taking the trip to come see it before it closes.

Afterwards, I made my way to the Barrett Art Center's Photowork 2010 reception. Unfortunately my camera's batteries died within the first few minutes, so I wasn't able to take many photos. Heres what I did get:

Photowork 2010 juried photography exhibition by Nat Trotman, Associate Curator at the Guggenheim. The photographs are from a wide range of local residents and reasonably priced. It'll be up until May 15th and is definitely worth checking out.
